AUTHOR’S NOTE about THE HEART TRILOGY
In 1985, when I started writing PURPOSES OF THE HEART (my first novel), I had no idea what I might be setting in motion. I certainly never expected to file a civil lawsuit against the sitting president of the United States! After 30-plus years together, I could not imagine Billy Clinton’s threat to destroy me. I didn’t anticipate false stories about me that Billy’s power-hungry, coattail-clutching wife Hillary would plant with complicit “journalists.”
I didn’t realize, in 1985, that Billy Clinton’s sexual addiction would compel him to sexually harass a state employee and then lie about it under oath in her federal lawsuit against him. Along with the rest of the world, I was shocked and disgusted to learn that he callously took advantage of his office and powerful position to have an affair in the White House with an impressionable intern young enough to be his daughter. I never thought that I, who in 1985 had not yet faced my own demons, would be talking about recovery from sexual abuse and addiction on national and international television.
I didn’t dream that writing a novel would lead to my subpoena in the Jones v Clinton lawsuit. I never imagined being questioned by federal investigators from the Office of the Independent Counsel as well as the House Judiciary Committee on the impeachment of President William Jefferson Clinton. (Yes, I told the truth!) After that painful experience, I’m now grateful to all those investigators for uncovering incontrovertible proof of the truth of my statements.
Although Billy Clinton has been blatantly and carelessly telling lies all his life, I didn’t expect him to handle the Jones v Clinton lawsuit, testimony before a Grand Jury, feigned repentance for lying to the American people, and his impeachment trial by telling even more lies, plus obstructing justice and tampering with witnesses.
It didn’t occur to me in 1985 that I would tell more “truth” in a trilogy of novels than Billy Clinton would later tell under oath!
I hope you enjoy reading my “loosely-autobiographical” novels more than I enjoyed living them. ~ Dolly
